Pregnancy Week By Week: Week 5
The fetus is the size of a grain of rice and its organs are still developing at week five of pregnancy. The heart is now formed and has the different chambers now and is pumping blood. The umbilical cord and the placenta are still developing further as the neural tube is being formed by the cells in the top layers. This top layer also produces the sweat glands, hair, nails, and skin of the child. The third layer of cells which is known as the endoderm, produces the pancreas, thyroid, intestines and the lungs in the baby which is still developing.
During week five of pregnancy the pregnancy symptoms include bloating and nausea along with the earlier symptoms of breasts being sore and the need to urinate often. What is the most prominent pregnancy symptom is fatigue. Though this will prevail right through the pregnancy it is usually worse in the early pregnancy stages. Light exercise like a brisk walk in the fresh air will definitely help and make the mother to be feel much better and lessen the symptoms of fatigue.
Pregnancy complications to look out for during early pregnancy stages are ectopic pregnancy when the egg which is fertilized gets implanted in the fallopian tubes outside the uterus. This could also happen in the cervix or the ovary too. Chances of having an ectopic pregnancy are very rare in reality but if there has been any inflammation of the pelvic area or if the woman has already been through an ectopic pregnancy earlier, then there are more chances of having another one in the future.
Some signs that the pregnancy maybe ecptopic are nausea, abdominal pain and bleeding. However, these are signs which are similar to normal pregnancy symptoms, so to ensure whether it is an ectopic pregnancy it is best to have an ultra sound scan or check the HCG levels. The regular obstetrician will be able to identify the problem and give a proper solution.
