Pregnancy Week By Week: Week 6

The symptoms of morning sickness, darkening of the areolas and tender breasts continue in the week six of pregnancy. The mother to be could either loose weight during this period because of morning sickness and lack of appetite, or if this has not been too severe could gain a few pounds too. Sometimes morning sickness is so severe that there is too much of body fluid lost and dehydration could set in. In such cases the treatment is to hospitalize the mother and give her intravenous fluids. There is no risk involved to the baby as long as the mother is given prompt attention. Doctors agree that is the mother is too young, if it is a first pregnancy and if the mother is obese such problems of nausea can arise. After such an episode the doctor may put the mother on supplementary vitamins to ensure that the baby gets the proper amount of nourishments.

An ultra sound scan during the week six of pregnancy will give an idea of the baby’s crown to rump length. The fetus can be between 2 to 5 mm during the week five of pregnancy and resembles a blob with the eyes, ears and nostrils appearing as dark spots where these faculties will develop later. The limbs will materialize from minute buds on the body and when the hands and feet appear they will have webs between them. The fetus now starts moving and can react to touch. The reflexes of the fetus can also be recognized as the central nervous system is now joining the muscles and the limbs with the rest of the body. The heart beat though not audible in the ultrasound is very much there at a rate of 140 beats per a minute. The blood is now circulating through the baby’s vascular system.
