Pregnancy Week By Week: Week 7

During pregnancy week seven the mother will need to get herself some maternity clothes as her earlier clothes are not going to fit her comfortably anymore and she will need loose clothing now. Though the bulge of the abdomen will not be very prominent there will be a definite increase in the size and the mother will feel very uncomfortable if she wears constricting clothes. It is also not healthy to wear something which restricts free movement at this time. The discomfort will be for the mother and this will also tell on the fetus if the clothing is too tight. A few weeks down the line the abdomen will be more pronounced and can be seen from the outside of the clothing too.

The fetus is now growing much faster and could be around 13mm in length. During pregnancy week seven small veins appear and there is formation of the eyes and mouth, webbing of the toes and fingers and forming of teeth. There are other parts which are developing but cannot be seen like the intestines and the appendix, the major muscles and the tongue. It is during this stage of the pregnancy that the liver of the baby starts producing blood cells and the blood type of the baby is formed. The muscle system of the baby is also building up and the baby gets much more active now within the mother’s womb.

Many women may still have morning sickness and this could also continue until the end of the term of pregnancy. Another discomfort which may appear during this stage of pregnancy are migraines and severe headaches and this is specially so if the mother is already prone to head aches prior to getting pregnant. Even if this is not so the headaches can start now and continue until later. Migraines are throbbing headaches which are usually at the temples and on one side of the head and when this gets worse could be accompanied by nausea and vomiting too. Treatment for this is putting a cold compress on the forehead and allowing the mother to sleep it off until the headache goes away. In case of the headache not being relieved then a doctor should be seen for medication.
