Pregnancy Week By Week: Week 8

During pregnancy week eight fatigue and nausea can get worse and this is just a sign of fetal growth which could be up to 20 mm in length. Development at this stage is quite significant and the tail of the tadpole disappears and the parts of the body are quite defined. The toes and fingers may still have the webbing but are much more defined, the length of the legs and the arms are more pronounced and parts like the end of the nose with the cartilage, the elbows and the eyelids are much more pronounced. During this stage of pregnancy the nerve cells in the fetus brain start forming a net work in the brain tissue and this is what will be there for the rest of its life. The lungs are also still developing and the tissues start branching out from pipes which are connecting the throat and the lungs. The various stages of pregnancy are fascinating and though not visible to the outside world some wonders are happening within the mother’s womb. In fact the pregnancy cannot be seen by an outsider as there are not too many tell tale signs as yet, but family members and the mother are aware of the pregnancy which will start showing visibly when the pregnancy is around four to five months.

The breasts begin to get enlarged and if the discomfort and soreness is too much maternity bras can be worn which will be more comfortable and can be used right through the pregnancy. The body is preparing itself for the coming of the baby and the uterus is expanding to hold the baby. This causes cramps and tightness in the lower abdomen. However these symptoms will disappear as the pregnancy progresses. In case there is any spotting or bleeding along with the cramps the obstetrician should be consulted immediately. The health provider will think of the line of treatment which should be given.
